Cats are trapped in a humane trap sometimes called havahart traps. They are then transported to a clinic/veterinarian where they are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, ear notched and, in some cases, micro chipped and then returned to their original location. Kittens and friendly adults are removed and adopted into good homes after veterinarian clearance.

In a TNR program, a feral cat colony caregiver is usually a volunteer rescue worker. The caregiver feeds the cats on a regular basis and brings them to a veterinarian if they require medical assistance. The resultant group of cats entering the caregivers sphere is known as a managed feral cat colony.
