Utah Collie Rescue

About UCR (Utah Collie Rescue)

We love all dogs but we are particularly dedicated to the rescue and responsible placement of rough and smooth collies in the Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming and Nevada region. We are located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Anyone who has watched Lassie knows the dog is beautifully elegant, but those who have lived with a collie will know what a very special family member this breed of dog can become and can recall instant, treasured memories of the life-long bond they developed with their collie.

You may not see too much activity on our website (we’re actually just fine with that) and while it isn’t often in our area to have a collie needing placement, these special family-oriented pets can occasionally find themselves in circumstances with no place to go. That is where we hope to come in with rescue, health and behavior analysis and finally matching these dogs, young or old, with their new permanent forever families.

Thank you for stopping by!

Different Collie Types - Rough Coat, Smooth Coat

There are two varieties of collies, the rough coat (long hair) and smooth coat (short hair). Collies are family dogs and need to be part of your family, they are not dogs that will do well left to live outside. Gentle, loving and good with kids, they generally get along with other pets and are all around sweet dogs to have as part of your family.

Rough Coat Collie

Temperament: active and friendly
Lifespan: 12-14 years
Maintenance: medium
Recommended for: families

Breeders say it is a gentle-natured dog and loyal towards its family. There is little evidence of Collies responsible for attacks on humans. The statistics are there, but realistically quite low. Collies are loyal and protective of their families, especially towards children. The breed is know for its intelligence though has yet to lose its herding instincts. Collies respond to firm but gentle training and discipline and may become stubborn if subjected to harsh treatment. The breed is agile and easy to train.

The breed is prone to a hereditary eye problem called Collie Eye Anomaly that can cause blindness in one or both eyes. This condition, can be detected at an early age. The long narrow muzzle, if lacking in pigment, is also prone to sunburn. Fair skinned dogs may require sun block on these areas. Dogs with black noses experience no problems. Finally, not all heartworm medications are safe for Collies. Check with your local veterinarian which medication to use. Their expected lifespan is 12-14 years.

Smooth Coat Collie

Temperament: active and friendly
Lifespan: 12-14 years
Maintenance: medium

They is generally a sociable, easily trained family dog. Non aggressive, they are alert and vocal, making them good watchdogs if well trained. Collies are agile and active dogs and need regular exercise in some way. Due to their high intelligence and eagerness to please their owners they are easy to train. Sensitive to correction they tend to shy away from harsh treatment, positive reinforcement training works well. They get along with children and other animals. They make excellent family pets.

They suffere many of the same health issues as their rough coat relatives and a few of their own. Some of these include:
Collie eye anomaly (CEA), a collection of eye problems, click link for more info.
Progressive retinal atrophy, a gradual degeneration of the retinas of the eyes, eventually leading to blindness. Click link for more info.
Gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat), a painful and often fatal twisting of the stomach. Click link for more info.
